There are two main causes of intrinsic attenuation. One is light absorption and the other one is scattering. Light absorption is a major cause of losses in optical fiber during optical transmission. The light is absorbed in the fiber by the materials of fiber optic. Thus light absorption in optical fiber is also known as material absorption. A fiber laser (or fibre laser in British English) is a laser in which the active gain medium is an optical fiber doped with rare-earth elements such as erbium, ytterbium, neodymium, dysprosium, praseodymium, thulium and are related to doped fiber amplifiers, which provide light amplification without nonlinearities, such as stimulated Raman scattering or . In the study of the mechanisms of the optical propagation loss caused by waveguide SWR, Marcuse proposed the earliest theory in in which the optical power ratio at the nonuniform boundary was considered [].In , Payne and Lacey proposed a theoretical model for defining the relation between the optical scattering loss and sidewall roughness of a waveguide Author: Hongpeng Shang, Degui Sun, Peng Yu, Bin Wang, Ting Yu, Tiancheng Li, Huilin Jiang.

Silica fibers which have been optimized for long-distance optical fiber communications have very low propagation losses, approaching the limit given by Rayleigh scattering.

For wavelengths substantially below the often used μm region, Rayleigh scattering alone would be higher than the actual losses of these fibers at μm wavelength. Edition: 2. We derive analytic expressions for the Brillouin thresholds of square pulses in optical fibers. The equations are valid for pulse durations in the transient Brillouin scattering regime (less than nsec), as well for longer pulses, and have been confirmed experimentally.

Our analysis also gives a firm theoretical prediction that the Brillouin gain width increases dramatically for intense. Laser diffraction uses Mie theory of light scattering to calculate the particle size distribution, assuming a volume equivalent sphere model.

Mie theory requires knowledge of the optical properties (refractive index and imaginary component) of both the sample being measured, along with the refractive index of the dispersant. Together, absorption and scattering produce the attenuation curve for a typical glass optical fiber shown above.
